Understanding Heat Pump Efficiency Ratings

Heat pump efficiency is rated in several ways. The higher the numbers, the more efficient the heat pump. Here’s what you need to know about ratings:

• Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) is a rating for seasonal heating efficiency
• Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) is a rating for seasonal cooling efficiency
• Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) is a rating for instantaneous cooling efficiency. This also is how window air conditioners are rated, making easier comparisons.
• New heat pumps typically range from 7.7 to 10 HSPF and from 13 to 18 SEER

Efficiency ratings are important if you want to qualify for discounts, tax credits, or cash incentives.

To qualify for a $200 instant discount from an approved contractor, your heat pump must be a minimum Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI) certified 7.7 HSPF and 13 SEER. The heat pump system must meet installation specifications.

Appliance Rebates

We offer rebates on the purchase of new, ENERGY STAR® qualified front-load clothes washers and electric clothes dryers. The program is offered to all Deschutes Municipal Light’s customers for appliances installed in new or existing homes or businesses within our service area.

New ENERGY STAR® qualified appliances purchased within the past 6 months are eligible for this rebate. If you’re unsure whether your appliances qualify, visit the ENERGY STAR® product finder.

Rebate Amounts

• Clothes washer – front-load, electric hot water: $35
• Clothes washer – front-load, gas, or propane hot water: $30
• Electric clothes dryer: $50
